Nissan Nismo Team (Nissan Nismo)

Definition and Heritage
Nissan Nismo (Nissan Motorsport International Co., Limited) is the official motorsport and high-performance division under Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. Founded on 17 September 1984, the outfit is headquartered in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Nismo stands for "Nissan Motorsport", underpinned by its core "Track to Road" philosophy—transferring technologies and expertise honed on the race track directly into the development of production high-performance models. Over four decades of development, Nismo has evolved into the quintessential symbol of Nissan in global motorsport, encompassing Super GT, Formula E, GT3 customer racing, and high-performance road cars.

Founding Background and Early Milestones
Nismo was established in the early 1980s amidst a booming Japanese motorsport scene, initially operating as "Nissan Motorsport International Co., Limited" to consolidate and spearhead Nissan’s racing initiatives worldwide. Following its inception, Nismo swiftly became Nissan’s engineering backbone across various motorsport categories, demonstrating formidable prowess in Japanese domestic racing. Since the inaugural season of the All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship (JGTC, the predecessor to Super GT) in 1993, Nismo has been a mainstay, campaigning iconic machines like the Skyline GT-R in the premier GT500 class and establishing a lasting legacy in Japan's top-flight GT arena. In 1998, the Nissan R390 GT1 secured a 3rd-place overall finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, marking a historic milestone for Nismo in international endurance racing.

Super GT: Nismo's Core Racing Battleground
Super GT represents Nismo's most enduring motorsport commitment. Since the JGTC era began in 1993, Nismo has never missed a season in the premier GT500 category, fielding legendary machines such as the Skyline GT-R, 350Z, Fairlady Z, NISSAN GT-R, and NISSAN Z. In 2022, the NISSAN Z GT500 made its racing debut, with TEAM IMPUL's Kazuki Hiramine and Bertrand Baguette steering it to the GT500 Drivers' Championship. For the 2026 season, Nissan/NMC is fielding three NISSAN Z NISMO GT500 race cars, managed by Team Impul, NISMO, and KONDO RACING respectively. Among them, the factory-run No. 23 Motul Niterra Z is piloted by Katsumasa Chiyo and Mitsunori Takaboshi, with veteran driver Tsugio Matsuda stepping up as NISMO Team Principal. Under the skin, the Nissan Z NISMO GT500 is powered by an NR20A 2.0-litre inline-four direct-injection single-turbo engine churning out over 550 hp and more than 50 kg·m of torque, mated to a 6-speed sequential gearbox and running on Michelin tyres.

Formula E: Spearheading the Electrification Strategy
Formula E serves as a pivotal pillar in Nissan's global electrification strategy, standing as the ultimate proving ground for Nismo’s high-performance electrified engineering. Nissan entered Formula E as a full works manufacturer in Season 5 (2018/19), making history as the first and only Japanese marque to compete in the championship. In Season 12 (2025/26), Nissan Formula E Team driver Oliver Rowland clinched a memorable victory in Monaco, amassing six podium finishes throughout the campaign to secure 4th overall in the Drivers' Championship, maintaining his top-four streak in every season since rejoining the team in Season 10. Season 13 (2026/27) heralds the dawn of the GEN4 era, where race output surges from 300 kW to 450 kW, topping out at 600 kW in Attack Mode alongside an active all-wheel-drive system. Nissan Formula E Team has locked in its driver line-up with Oliver Rowland and Zane Maloney, marking Rowland’s seventh campaign with the Japanese outfit. Furthermore, Nissan has inked a multi-year powertrain supply deal with the Andretti Formula E team starting in Season 13, expanding the grid to four Nissan-powered GEN4 race cars.

Customer Racing and GT3/GT4 Programmes
Nismo’s technical expertise extends well beyond its factory racing programmes. In the GT3 category, Nissan/NMC continues to provide full technical support for customer entries campaigning the Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 across the Super GT GT300 class, Fanatec GT World Challenge Asia, and the SRO Japan Cup. In the GT4 ranks, Nismo supports two Nissan Z NISMO GT4 entries in the Super Taikyu Series ST-Z class, where Team Zeroone’s No. 25 car is shared by Ryuichiro Otsuka, Ryuichiro Tomita, and Takuro Shinohara. Over in North America, Nismo has partnered with Forsberg Racing to run the NISMO GT-Z project, actively showcasing NISMO performance parts at prominent events such as GRIDLIFE.

High-Performance Road Cars
As Nissan’s dedicated performance arm, Nismo is tasked with developing high-performance variants of production road cars, translating track-honed capabilities into everyday street performance. Its contemporary line-up features the GT-R Nismo, Fairlady Z Nismo, Ariya Nismo, and AURA Nismo, alongside legendary heritage icons like the NISMO 270R and NISMO 400R. By housing its engineering, design, and motorsport divisions under one roof at its headquarters, Nismo ensures that track-tested expertise feeds directly into the production car development pipeline. In 2024, Nismo marked its 40th anniversary with a heritage exhibition at the Nissan Global Headquarters Gallery—showcasing everything from the Le Mans-spec R390 GT1 and Daytona-winning R91CP to modern-day Nismo road cars—capping off the celebrations with the 2024 Nismo Festival at Fuji International Speedway.

Summary
Nissan Nismo stands as one of the longest-standing factory motorsport divisions in Japanese automotive history. Over the past four decades, its journey has encapsulated the evolution of Japanese GT racing, the gruelling challenges of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the modern transition into Formula E electric racing. Nismo’s defining hallmark remains its steadfast commitment to the "Track to Road" ethos—where motorsport serves not merely as a competitive arena, but as a crucial testbed for technical innovation and talent development. As the GEN4 era kicks off in Formula E and the NISSAN Z continues its charge in Super GT, Nismo’s status at the heart of Nissan’s global motorsport empire remains unchallenged.
